Position: Manager, General Merchandise Buying Group

Location: St. George Bookstore, Koffler Student Centre University of Toronto, 214 College Street.
Appointment Type: Full time, salaried
Summary and Key Responsibilities:

You will lead the team responsible for the selection, acquisition, merchandising, marketing, and management of General Merchandise (GM) products for all University of Toronto retail locations. The GM department includes most non-book campus retail product, including clothing, gifts, stationery, food, and technology.

You are accountable to maximize sales and margins through the creative selection of product, shrewd negotiation, and careful inventory management.

You will collaborate as a team with store management, Marketing, Receiving and Ecommerce to provide the best possible service to our customers, while optimizing the use of limited resources.

Reports To: VP Retail
Number of Reports: 9 F/T

Key Responsibilities include:
• Leading and coaching of GM buyers in assortment planning, product selection, vendor negotiations, quantities purchased, and retail pricing, to ensure sales and margins are maximized.
• Business development, planning, and budgeting for the GM Department.
• Hiring and development of buying team, maintains high morale and reinforces good principles to ensure organizational targets are met.
• Ensuring tight inventory control through seasonal open-to-buy analysis, supplier performance management, and timely returns or markdowns.
• Supporting buyers in the development of new vendor relationships, new brand partnerships and new product line identification, including attendance at professional tradeshows and through independent research.
• Together with the VP Retail, Marketing Manager, Ecommerce Manager and store managers develops and implements marketing plans for both in-store and online.
• Ensuring the timely and cost effective fulfillment of special orders for departments and customers, on and off campus.
• Coordinating consistent merchandising for all the University of Toronto retail locations.
• Acting as a primary liaison to Ancillary Services, who manage the licensing of the University of Toronto brand.
• Leading and coordinating with other managers to maintain and develop business initiatives, such as Convocation, Home Coming or orientation events, to deliver great customer experiences for students, university staff and alumni.

Education, Qualifications and Experience:

• University or College graduate, or equivalent combination of work and education.
• 3 – 5 years of retail purchasing experience.
• Excited by apparel and gift retail, or experienced with campus retail.
• Proven track record of:
o Meeting deadlines.
o Managing margins and inventory.
o Meeting financial targets.
o Negotiating price and terms with vendors.
o Developing plan-o-grams for store merchandising.
o Providing high quality and cost effective marketing ideas.
o Working well under pressure.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:
