University of Toronto Bookstore First in Canada to Launch a Rental Textbook Program

January 20, 2011 - The University of Toronto Bookstore Was the First University Bookstore in Canada to Launch a Rental Textbook Program and Now Almost One Quarter of All Textbooks Titles are Available to Rent This Term.

Accounting for over 550 textbook titles, trendsetting U of T Bookstore now offers a new and used textbook program that saves students 40% to 60% off the new book price.

Toronto, ON (CNW) Jan 12, 2011 - The University of Toronto Bookstore is on a mission to save students money. Almost one quarter of textbook titles are rentable for the January term saving students 40% to 60% off the new book price at all three campuses.

The U of T Bookstore was the first University book store in Canada to rent textbooks. The May 2009 test program was expanded further in September and after completing a student survey made some significant improvements for the January term.

Program highlights:

  • 555 Titles on the Rental Program (almost a quarter of all textbook titles )
  • Over 60% of the rental titles are available at 55% - 60% off renting used
  • New books are rented at a 40% discount
  • Textbooks can be rented online or in store
  • The rental textbook program is available on all three campuses including downtown Toronto, University of Toronto Mississauga and University of Toronto Scarborough.

In the Bookstore's September student survey, some students still preferred to rent a new book, but far more said that they wanted to add a used book rental option at higher savings. Also, some students did not rent because they were not aware of the program, their book was not being offered or they did not know you could still highlight and make notes in the books.

VP of Retail, Chad Saunders says, "This term, we added dramatically more titles, used textbook rentals at bigger discounts, in store rentals, and gone to great lengths to communicate the program on campus.  We are listening and want to save students as much money as we can."
